"The explosion wasn't due to a terrorist act or mechanical failure"

This is how the Stars and Stripes "explained" why the vending machine exploded last Friday. Hmm. If you take away terrorism AND mechanical failure, there isn't much left is there? Vandalism you say? Well if someone vandalized the machine to the point of a delayed explosion, wouldn't that be considered terrorism? Ya, probably not because one of the Americans likely did it...I'm just saying....

Not much has been going on lately. I've been busy with work and school so I don't have a lot to write about unless you are interested in hearing about meterology or METAR. Didn't think so.

AAFES has been in the paper a lot lately regarding on base gas prices and how high they are. I think they stand at about $2.00 a gallon. People are complaining that the US national average is lower and that we should get special discounts since we are military serving overseas. These same people think AAFES is skimming off the top and not putting the extra money back into military programs (yes they probably are just like MCCS but regardless...). As a Californian who spent a couple years living in the San Francisco Bay area I can attest to the fact that gas prices have been around $1.75 to $2.00 for years and I'm thinking back to around 1996-2002. I'm sure they are a lot higher now. In 1996 gas was $1.75 a gallon in San Francisco and $0.86 a gallon in Myrtle Beach. Just over the border into North Carolina the gas was about $1.07 on the same day even. People need to realize that 1. gas prices vary from State to State and, 2. There is this little war goin' on in Iraq right now (don't know if they've heard about it or not) and it is reeking havoc on gas prices and the quantities of oil available. Jeesh. I don't know what they are so upset about. If you go off base and buy gas at a Japanese gas station you pay by the liter. Right now it is about 102 yen to the liter and 1 gallon is almost 4 liters so you wind up paying about $3.75 a gallon. Many Americans don't veture off base too often to know this. If they did I bet these same people who have been whining in the opinion column would still complain selfishly instead of realizing, "Hey wait a minute...we have it pretty darn good compared to other countries!"

Today is a picture-perfect day. It's about 70 degrees outside with only a slight breeze and a perfectly clear blue sky. We haven't seen anything but gray in a long time. Makes me wish I could go flying this afternoon. When the sky is clear like this, the ocean looks turquoise and you can see the coral perfectly. My office is right across the street from the beach. In between us and the East China Sea is a park that starts at the T in the road. At the top of the T is a large waterfall that flows down in the middle of steps that descends from the park to the narrow street. I wish I had a camera today. If it is still nice tomorrow I will take some pictures and post them.
