T'estimo Ad

This is the lip gloss ad I was talking about and to me it epitomizes Japanese advertising. I will try to find ads from the two other types that I mentioned before - the Japanese businessman and the cartoon ads for unlikely products.

Wow, not that much different from the US

Maybe not - because I've been out of the States now for three years. But when I was back there, I remember ads being a lot darker and not as pretty.

When you spend a lot of time in Japan you learn to take in more. You appreciate details and nature more. I guess if you were to show this to a bunch of Americans, women especially they might say, "Oh that is pretty" and that would be it.

In Japan, if you place that picture in front of women or men there would be a lot of oohing and aahing at first. Then their voices would get real quiet and their speech would get a little slower and words would be pronounced a little clearer as they pointed at each nice part of the picture. One person would point out the flowers and how healthy they look. Another would point out how perfect the graphics blend with the nature in the picture. Another person would point out the woman's hair or makeup. Then there would be complete silence for a minute while they finish taking the picture in. This silence isn't a loss of words or an uncomfortable silence, but an acknowledgement of what has been said, like a silent conversation. In fact at that point it would be considered a little rude and obnoxious if someone kept on going at this point.

Man maybe I have been here too long. I used to think the way Japanese people took in things was pretty gay but now I'm defending it.

If you don't know it yet, "T'estimo" means "I love you" in Catalan. For more info, search "Catalan language" in Wikipedia. ;-)
