I'll have Spam Spam Spam Spam Spam eggs goya and Spam!

Quick Okinawan veggie lesson. This spikey cucumber thing is called goya. While it's very nutritious and loaded with vitamin C it's extremely bitter and tastes like last night's regurgitated dinner. It can be served raw (most bitter) on salads but another popular recipe is what you see in the bottom picture. Stir-fried goya with Spam and eggs.

Spam Spam Spam Spam, Spam Spam Spam Spam.... oh sorry. Couldn't help myself...

Okinawans eat this vegetable in the summer months because it is supposed to give you extra energy. Okinawans live longer than anyone else in the world and goya has been praised as an important longevity staple in their diet. If you do try it...well I warned you. Posted by Picasa

Hi,
I just discovered your blog through Mrs M. It's really fun! I was all over Japan last year when I toured with Cyndi Lauper. We didn't make it to Okinawa, but we saw plenty of places in 2 weeks! I look forward to spending some time catching up over here at your blog...

I have a blog called LAST GIRL ON EARTH: The wacky musings of a girly New York musician who is attempting to prove that you don't have to be a 19 year old anorexic model babe to be successful.

I think you just might find it kind of fun. Check it out if you get a moment.

I'll be back soon!
All the best,
Deni

Hi Deni,

Thanks for visiting :) I have to go to work but I took a quick glimpse at your two sites and I can't wait to sit down and read more. I'm a musician too, though I decided a long time ago not to try to go professional with it because my love of aviation was too overpowering. I play the cello, violin, guitar and electric bass. The cello is my best instrument and I love playing all of the above when I have a spare moment at the house. I've always dreamed of playing with Rufus Wainwright's band or even in a pit orchestra again but I think too much time has passed to just drop everything and start a new career. Anyway thanks for reading my blog!

I had goya last week for the first time. It was served whole, stuffed with sliced beef, in some sort of broth. I actually thought it was rather tasty!

I have some American acquaintances who say they like goya, and natto too for that matter. I've pretty much learned that you either love it or hate it. I just don't like anything that is bitter but then again I'm a seriously picky eater.
