Movin' on up!

Well after 2 years of working for my current company (Japanese telecommunications corporation in case you haven't been following :) I got a new job! It's another IT job but this time I will be working for a contractor on base. The job itself is a serious downgrade, from a database administrator to a help desk technician, but this new position will almost double my pay and there is serious promotion potential!

I'll miss working for my present company - mostly because of the friendships I've made. I consider myself pretty jaded as far as living in Japan nowadays, but one thing I've NEVER taken for granted is the fact that I work for a Japanese company. I'm an American living in Japan on the Japanese economy and to this day that still blows my mind.

So why am I leaving? Well two reasons. Okay three reasons:

1. I will be able to transfer with this job when we move back to the States.
2. I'm good at what I do but I seriously HATE database administration and I would rather fix peoples' computers or do sysadmin for Windows or Unix machines. This job will begin to steer me in the right direction.
3. More $$. I was seriously underpaid for all the work I did. IT chicks in Japan don't make squat and my company isn't in a position to offer me such a large pay raise right now.

My company wants to keep me on part time because I'm seriously the only person there who can do what I do. Our webmaster is good with the daily tasks but not with actual Oracle database configuration. I don't mind. The company has been good to me. So good that I actually wouldn't think twice about coming in for free to train and fix configurations in the future.

So anyway I start my new job on the 22nd. Even though my husband is active duty, I will be getting my own SOFA status and benefits with the job. I'm also excited about working in a 100% English working environment for some reason. Yeah me!

Hi Letti!!

That's really the main reason I'm leaving my company. Where I'm at right now, the work is challenging and my co-workers are the best. The money is good enough to hang around considering all the other perks but I just want to make sure I have some stability when we leave here.
