Obon
Today is Obon. In the Buddhist religion, this is the day when people celebrate the return of their dead relatives. The spirits come home once a year and the surviving family gather together to celebrate the occasion. I found a good link describing Obon in depth:

Anyway, so In Okinawa some people go to the beach to welcome the spirits instead of waiting at their houses. With that said, my husband went diving today. I had heard that you shouldn't go into the water on the first day of Obon so the spirits can come to the island safely, like without obstruction. When I asked him if the dive site was quiet he said there was a Japanese man out there. So maybe I heard wrong?
When I told him that today was Obon he said, "Wow then we were obviously swimming with some spirits today!" Apparently at first the water was perfectly clear but when they all got in (there were 4 divers in the group)the visibility went down to almost nothing for the rest of the dive. This one guy kept having buoyancy issues, some strange ones that he couldn't control well, and that same guy's oxygen meter went from 500 right to 0 at the very end of the dive when he was still down at 50 feet. The water was so murky for some reason, they kept losing sight of him. My DH thinks it was the spirits' way of saying, "Get the Hell out of the water on our day!"
You never know!
